Fungia gravis

Characters: Polyps are elongate, up to 200 mm long with irregular sides. They are thick and heavy and usually have a central arch and long axial furrow. Most septa extend from the mouth to the perimeter. Peripheral mouths are sometimes formed.

Colour: Dark brown or reddish.

Similar Species: Fungia taiwanensis is less thick and has a relatively short axial furrow. Fungia seychellensis does not have an irregular shape nor peripheral mouths. See also Ctenactis echinata.

Habitat: Reef habitats.

Abundance: Uncommon.

Taxonomic Note: Called Pleuractis gravis by Gittenberger, Reijnen and Hoeksema (2011) from molecular data. However, this requires further study.
